While trying to find a girl who will date him, Missouri high school junior Leon Sanders befriends a lonely, disfigured female classmate who was burned in a childhood accident. He soon finds out that Melody is funny and interesting. When their friendship becomes something more, Leon is happy at first but then popular Amy Green asks him out after he saves her from detention. Now Leon must make a decision, trying not to hurt anyone's feelings in the process.
