When demons begin appearing on Earth unpredictably, foreshadowing a cataclysmic breakdown of their magic, Artemis and his friends face a new foe--a twelve-year-old girl whose intellect just might match Artemis's own--as they try to prevent catastrophe.

Artemis Fowl, having reverted to his criminal lifestyle following his last run-in with the fairies, travels to Berlin intending to steal a famous painting from a German bank, not realizing his old rival, Opal Koboi, has been just waiting for a chance to destroy him.

Artemis has no memory of the fairy people and has returned to his unlawful ways.

Artemis's fairy friends help him travel back in time to find a cure for his mother's rare disease which can only be cured by the brain fluid of now-extinct African lemurs, and is shocked to discover that it was actually his younger self who was responsible for bringing about the animal's extinction.
