Jack Putnam and his little brother Benny are dragged along on a summer vacation to Chowder Bay, Maine, and their previously boring trip turns into an adventure to a mysterious locale with giant lobsters, Civil War ghosts, and kleptomaniac eagles.

Brothers Jack and Benny investigate the mysterious death of Dr. True while on vacation with their family in Chowder Bay, Maine, and must determine whether the town's famed Captain Holister was somehow involved.

Jack and Benny are having a hard time reading "The Hidden History of Chowder Bay," given to them by Captain Hollister, but when a spooky whaling ship appears in the bay, the boys abandon the tome and join the search for Caldera, the fiercest whale that ever lived.

Benny and Angus try save Jack from the ghost whaling ship Nutmeg, which is in search of the whale Caldera.

Brothers Jack and Benny anticipate a dull summer when they are forced to go on a family vacation to Chowder Bay, Maine, but when a giant kleptomaniac eagle swoops in with an obsession for hats, the boys get to scale a nearby mountain.
