Chicago record-company executive Leonard Chess makes a name for his company, Chess Records, and the new talent he signs, including Etta James, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters, while the musicians deal with fame, sex, drugs, race issues, and violence during the 1950s and 1960s.
